Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party, has elucidated his responsibilities as Vice President, addressing the criticisms regarding his inability to execute the policies he now intends to introduce.
He emphasized that he is prepared to implement these initiatives once he assumes the presidency. In response to inquiries during a meeting with media representatives about his current lack of action as Vice President, Dr. Bawumia explained that his role is primarily to support the President in realizing the latter’s vision.
He acknowledged his limited powers in this capacity but asserted that, if elected as President in the forthcoming elections, he would possess the full authority necessary to enact his proposed policies.
To further clarify the constraints of the Vice Presidential role, Dr. Bawumia posed a question regarding the recent budget approved by Parliament, inquiring whether it was his budget or that of the President.
The budget that was approved by Parliament went to Parliament in the name of the President, so it is the President’s budget. It is not my budget.
That is why I have outlined my own plans and my own vision which I can implement when I become President with full authority in three months, in shaa Allah.
Dr. Bawumia posed a question regarding the expectations placed upon him as Vice President to realize his vision, given that he has never held the office of President.
He inquired, “If I am required to implement my vision in this role, what then is expected of former President Mahama, who seeks to return to the presidency?”
Why didn’t he do all those he wants to come back and do when he was President? He has been President before with full authority and he could have done all the things he is mentioning now. I have never been President before and I have never had full authority before. That is why I have come out with my own new ideas.
