I ONCE WORKED AS A FARM LABORER, A TAXI DRIVER, AND A CLEANER-BAWUMIA

The Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, shared his past struggles during a meeting with the creative sector on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

In response to a request from dancehall artist Shatta Wale about finding ways to assist young people on the streets, Bawumia expressed his understanding of their challenges due to his own experiences.

Speaking in pidgin English at Shatta Wale’s suggestion, Dr. Bawumia remarked,

Me I be farmworker before, by-day worker, I be taxi driver before, I be cleaner before, so I know how people dey suffer before

He also discussed the humanitarian efforts he has been involved in to support those in need.

What dey my heart be the people wey dey suffer for the country inside. E be ein dey my heart. I be patron of Leper’s Aid Ghana. Me den lepers dey eat together because I dey wan help them. Also, I be patron of Mother Teresa’s Soup Kitchen and we help the street children. So my heart dey the street inside. The thing wey I dey do all, I dey do am sake of I wan help the people

Dr. Bawumia also emphasized that, thanks to digitalization, today’s youth can engage in various life activities without falling victim to exploitation or fraud.

The meeting, held at the Alisa Hotel in Accra, was attended by various stakeholders from the culture and creative industries.

After presenting the NPP’s achievements in the arts and outlining their plans if they win the upcoming election, creative professionals took turns to ask questions and suggest ideas for improving the industry.

The New Patriotic Party has pledged to offer tax incentives, a travel protocol service, e-visas for visitors, and online streaming platforms, among other initiatives, to support Ghana’s creative sector if elected in the December 2024 election.
