Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Running Mate to Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged individuals campaigning on religious and ethnic grounds to cease such tactics.
He asserted that utilizing religious or tribal affiliations as a strategy for securing the presidency has never been a factor for Ghanaian voters when making their electoral choices.
This statement follows recent comments from various political figures in the country who are attempting to place religion at the forefront of this year’s campaign efforts.
Some have even suggested that a Christian candidate should be favored for the presidency, citing that the majority of Ghanaians identify as Christians.
Dr. Prempeh, during a community engagement event in Ahenkro within the Afigya Kwabre North Constituency on Friday, October 4th, deemed this approach as regrettable. He emphasized that the citizens of Ghana have traditionally chosen their leaders based on their abilities, past performance, and vision for the future.
Since independence, Ghanaians have demonstrated that they do not discriminate when it comes to the choice of leaders. Religious and tribal affiliations have never been a consideration for electing Presidents in Ghana. Being a Christian or Muslim, a Mamprusi, Gonja or Asante really and truly does not matter.
NAPO, widely recognized by this name, expressed strong confidence that the citizens of Ghana will overwhelmingly support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate of the NPP, due to Dr. Bawumia’s demonstrated competence and visionary leadership.
He further noted that Dr. Bawumia, in his capacity as Vice President, has established a commendable record by effectively leading numerous significant social initiatives.
I am convinced that the good people of Ghana will vote massively for Alhaji Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to be the next President of Ghana because he is competent and has proven track record and integrity. He is the most visible Vice President in the history of Ghana and has successfully spearheaded many laudable interventions even as Vice President.
The Member of Parliament for the constituency, Hon. Collins Adomako Mensah, who is seeking re-election, highlighted the accomplishments of the New Patriotic Party in the fields of energy, education, health, and infrastructure development within Afigya Kwabre North and throughout the nation.
He emphasized that these achievements underscore the importance of Ghanaians supporting Dr. Bawumia and all the party’s parliamentary candidates. Hon. Collins Adomako Mensah also praised NAPO for his exemplary leadership and dedication, referring to him as an exceptional political mentor to himself and many others.
Additionally, Dr. Opoku Prempeh inaugurated a newly built ultramodern Sports Complex in Ahenkro, which was financed by the Ghana National Gas Company Ltd and received support from Nana Ahenkrosei Poku IV, the Chief of Ahenkro.
Following the inauguration, an inaugural football match took place between the Old Stars team, captained by Stephen Appiah, and the Afigya Kwabre North 11, with the former winning the match 3 goals to 1.
