Government initiatives have transformed Ghana’s education sector over the years. A key initiative has been the implementation of the Free Senior High School (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) policies, ensuring free access to senior secondary and TVET education for all students.
These policies have significantly increased enrollment rates and reduced financial barriers for many families. According to the Ministry of Education, senior secondary enrollment rose from 800,000 in 2016 to 1.4 million following the implementation of Free SHS.
Additionally, gender balance in admissions has improved, with more girls gaining admission and achieving gender parity in enrollment, as reported by the Ministry of Education.
Investments in teacher training, curriculum development, and school infrastructure have also been prioritized to enhance education quality. High pass rates in WASSCE, the expansion of classrooms and dormitories, and technology investments in secondary schools are examples of the government’s focus on quality education.
The initiative has been widely praised by education experts, teachers, and parents, who note the positive impact, especially for underprivileged families.
Although challenges such as overcrowding and a lack of facilities have been encountered, the government has responded by building additional boarding houses, classrooms, and laboratories.
In conclusion, Ghana’s commitment to improving educational access and quality through these initiatives and investments is evident, preparing students for success in a globalized world.
