WE WILL ENHANCE THE RESILIENCE OF COASTAL COMMUNITIES – DR. BAWUMIA

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the standard-bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has presented an extensive plan for the coastal areas, with a special emphasis on the fisheries industry, while on his campaign visit to various coastal communities in the Western Region.

Central to his vision is the dedication to facilitate the effective execution of a comprehensive fisheries strategy that covers marine and freshwater fisheries, along with aquaculture.

This strategy seeks to capitalize on numerous accomplishments of the NPP to tackle a range of issues encountered by the industry, such as the delayed automation of the complete premix fuel distribution, insufficient cold storage capacities, overfishing, illicit fishing methods, and restricted availability of credit and financial services.

Dr Bawumia has a vision for a prosperous fisheries sector that utilizes the abundant resources from our seas, inland water bodies, and aquaculture projects. His dedication lies in the effective execution of a comprehensive fisheries strategy that not only optimizes these resources but also promotes sustainable practices in all sectors – industrial, semi-industrial, and artisanal.

Furthermore, he expressed his determination to embrace digital, innovative, and climate-smart technologies for fish processing, value addition, and marketing, while addressing the challenges mentioned earlier. Acknowledging the crucial role of women in Ghana’s fisheries industry, Dr Bawumia promised to amplify their voices and enhance their economic empowerment.

FAO reports that the participation rate of women in Ghana in the fisheries sector is 40%. I dare say, this may be more. I will amplify the voice of women in this important sector and the socio-economic role they play while providing improved access to finance and smart technologies.

He further emphasized that his government’s vision is shaped by the significant investment made in the sector to improve marine security, uplift coastal communities, and support fishermen. Under the leadership of the NPP, the government has taken steps to strengthen the fisheries sector.

This includes the reestablishment of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture, equipping the Fisheries Commission, and constructing fish landing sites along the coast. Additionally, investments have been made in sea defense projects through the Coastal Protection Project. The government has also implemented various initiatives to enhance the sector.

Notable examples include the automation of premix fuel distribution, allocating GH¢2 million to prevent outbreaks of ISKVD, and providing patrol boats to improve production and safety. However, the dynamics of the fishing industry continue to change due to illegal activities, climate change, and advancements in fishing techniques.

These challenges necessitate ongoing investments in infrastructure. This includes the operationalization of the Fisheries Enforcement Unit and public fish hatcheries, the completion of the One-Stop Aquaculture Training Centre, and the construction of Aquaculture Centres in Amrahia. These measures aim to enhance the capabilities of our fishermen and fisherwomen.

Dr. Bawumia also mentioned that his efforts are in line with Ghana’s updated National Fisheries and Aquaculture Policy.
