6TH COHORT GRADUATES FROM BAWUMIA’S KAYAYEI SKILLS EMPOWERMENT PROGRAMME

The sixth cohort of the Dr. Bawumia Kayayei Skills Empowerment Programme recently graduated, marking a significant milestone for young women in the informal sector.

Launched by Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, the initiative aims to empower female porters (kayayei) by providing them with vocational skills and essential resources to create sustainable livelihoods.

Graduates received specialized training in six areas: soap and detergent making, baking, beads and jewelry making, decor, pedicure and manicure, and makeup artistry.

Reflecting on their experiences, many beneficiaries shared their motivations for joining, expressing a desire to move beyond the traditional kayayei role and start their own businesses.

Along with practical training, each graduate was given a tailored starter pack for their chosen skill area, as well as a stipend to help kickstart their entrepreneurial journey.

The initiative’s combined focus on skill development and resource support is aimed at empowering these women to achieve their professional goals and transition from economic vulnerability to self-reliance.
