Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the representative of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is scheduled to commence the next leg of his campaign tour in the Ahafo, Bono, and Bono East Regions on May 8th.
Following the completion of the initial phase of his campaign in the Western, Western North, and Eastern regions, the Vice President proceeded to the next stage.
During his campaign, Dr. Bawumia urged the people of Ghana to grant him the authority to govern, and in return, he made several commitments regarding policies that would define his presidency if he emerged victorious. Empowering Ghana has documented three of these pledges made by the Vice President, which you can find listed below:
100% GHANAIAN OWNERSHIP OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Bawumia has made a firm promise to ensure that mineral resources in Ghana are owned entirely by Ghanaians. This determination stems from his recognition that the current framework of the country’s mining sector creates the impression that Ghanaians do not have full control over their mineral wealth.
Dr. Bawumia expressed this dedication while embarking on his inaugural regional tour, commencing in the Eastern Region. During this tour, he engaged in fruitful conversations with religious leaders on April 29, 2024.
I am going to refocus our paradigm for natural resource management. For the most part, Ghana has not maximized the benefits of our natural resources.
FREE TERTIARY FOR PERSON’S WITH DISABILITY (PWDS)
Dr. Bawumia has promised to provide tuition-free tertiary education to all individuals with disabilities who are admitted to universities in Ghana. This announcement was made during a meeting with religious leaders in the Western North Region as part of his ongoing tour across the country.
He stressed that scholarships, although available to many, will be given special attention to those with disabilities. The NPP presidential candidate also mentioned that the scholarships will cover both academic and accommodation costs for all individuals with disabilities beginning in 2025.
I am very clear on the way forward. I believe that for persons with disabilities, we are going to support them a bit more. We are giving scholarships to every person but I am going to dedicate some of the monies to our scholarship secretariat and the GET Fund to provide free tertiary education; both tuition and accommodation to every person with a disability who makes it into the university so they can all benefit.
PLANS FOR A ROBUST FISHERIES INDUSTRY
Dr. Bawumia has made a promise to revolutionize the fishing industry once he takes office. This pledge was made during a speech to fishermen in the Western Region as part of his tour across the country. He emphasized the important economic impact that the fisheries sector could have on Ghana if it is properly enhanced.
He highlighted the supply chain inefficiencies in Premix Fuel distribution and the lack of adequate cold storage facilities as major issues affecting the sector. Furthermore, he addressed the problems of illegal and unreported fishing practices, along with the limited access to credit and financial services, as additional challenges that fishermen are currently facing
Dr. Bawumia has initiated the second leg of his campaign tour today in an effort to communicate his vision and policies to the people. His upcoming destination is the Bono and Ahafo region.
