DR. BAWUMIA COMMISSIONS STATE-OF-THE-ART RECYCLING AND MEDICAL WASTE FACILITIES IN THE UPPER WEST REGION

The Vice President of Ghana and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia commissioned an ultra-modern Integrated Recycling and Composting Plant (IRECOP) and Medical Waste Treatment facility in Kperiha, near Wa, on May 20, 2024. These facilities are set to transform waste management in the Upper West Region.

The newly inaugurated IRECOP boasts an impressive capacity, capable of processing 400 tons of municipal solid waste daily. This capacity ensures that the facility can handle the waste generated by the entire region, providing a sustainable solution to the prevalent waste management challenges. The plant represents a significant step towards achieving a cleaner and healthier environment for the residents of the Upper West Region.

The Centralized Medical Waste Treatment Facility will play a role in managing hazardous healthcare waste. This facility will collect and treat dangerous components such as used syringes, blood-stained materials, pathological waste, COVID-19 waste, and waste from vaccination exercises. By addressing these hazardous materials, the facility will improve health conditions and a safer environment for all.

The newly commissioned IRECOP, is the 7th to be commissioned, out of 16 to be built in all 16 regions, and the medical waste treatment facility, is the 4th commissioned, out of 14 to be built, through a collaboration between the government and Jospong Group of Companies

Apart from creating over 1000 direct jobs, these ultra-modern facilities will also ensure a healthy environment; improved health conditions of inhabitants; improved living conditions of the populace, and reduction in air, water, and land pollution

The commissioning of these facilities marks a significant milestone in the government’s ongoing efforts to promote sustainable development and environmental stewardship. Dr. Bawumia’s dedication to improving the lives of Ghanaians through such initiatives continues to resonate positively with communities nationwide.
