MAHAMA’S STATEMENT REGARDING HIS COMMITMENT TO COMBAT CORRUPTION LACKED PERSUASIVENESS – RICHARD AHIAGBAH

The Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Richard Ahiagbah, has expressed his disapproval of former President John Mahama’s assertions regarding his dedication to combating corruption if elected president in the upcoming general elections on December 7, 2024.

Mr. Ahiagbah maintained that Mr. Mahama’s declarations lack credibility and do not succeed in persuading the public of his anti-corruption position.

In an interview with JoyNews on Tuesday, May 21, he remarked,

The former President is unconvincing. He is not persuading anyone that he will combat corruption. His words lacked conviction.

This statement was made following the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer’s declaration that his future government will aggressively address and triumph over corruption in Ghana.

Mr. Mahama stressed that corruption is detrimental to the country’s economy and requires immediate attention, highlighting his determination to implement strong measures to tackle corruption if elected in the upcoming December elections.

In response, Mr. Ahiagbah contended that although accusations of corruption can be leveled against anyone, it is evident that Mr. Mahama’s administration was riddled with corruption.

He emphasized that unsubstantiated allegations cannot be considered as evidence of corruption, noting that the current administration has diligently investigated all corruption-related claims, produced reports, and pursued prosecutions where evidence was found.

Every corruption and corruption-related allegations under this government were duly investigated. Reports were brought where there was evidence for people to be prosecuted.

But there hasn’t been a case – if there are cases where people are found guilty to be prosecuted, this administration is the first.

Mr. Ahiagbah emphasized the significance of conducting thorough investigations when addressing corruption, emphasizing that it is unfair to brand anyone, including former President Mahama, as corrupt solely based on accusations.

He characterized such assertions as mere political rhetoric and firmly stated that only individuals who have undergone trial and been found guilty should be acknowledged as corrupt.

Presently, in this government, I don’t see that evidence. What I see is people making allegations. So, people should take a chill pill regarding the Akufo-Addo government and corruption.
