DR. BAWUMIA ATTRIBUTES HOUSEMAID SHORTAGE TO FREE SHS PROGRAMME

The Vice president and the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has recently highlighted a significant shift in Ghanaian society, attributing the current challenge of finding housemaids to the success of the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme.

Speaking at a campaign event, Dr. Bawumia pointed out that the Free SHS programme, a flagship policy of the NPP government, has dramatically increased access to secondary education, resulting in a notable decline in the availability of young individuals willing to take on housemaid roles

Dr. Bawumia pointed out that the Free SHS policy has contributed to reducing gender disparity in schools. He cited an increase in the number of girls attending SHS, indicating a positive transformation in the education sector. He mentioned that due to government initiatives, many girls who were previously employed as maids are now enrolled in school.

In 2016 for every 100 boys in Senior High School, you will have 68 girls, so there were no gender parity, but today after seven years of free senior high school education, for 100 boys you will now have 106 girls, and the girls have taken over the boys, that is what is happening now

The Free SHS programme continues to be a cornerstone of the NPP’s educational policy, receiving widespread praise for increasing literacy rates and providing equal opportunities for all Ghanaians. As the country moves towards the December 7th elections, Dr. Bawumia’s emphasis on the positive outcomes of the Free SHS policy serves as a reminder of the NPP’s commitment to enhancing the educational landscape in Ghana.
