Today, July 4, the National Executive Council (NEC) of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) convenes to deliberate on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s selection of a running mate for the upcoming December 7 general elections.
Dr. Bawumia is expected to present and justify his choice of Energy Minister, Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, explaining why he believes Dr. Prempeh is the most suitable candidate for the vice-presidential position.
This process is in accordance with the party’s constitution, which stipulates that the NEC, as the second highest decision-making body, must approve or reject the nomination.
Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh previously held the position of Education Minister before assuming the role of Energy Minister, overseeing the implementation of the government’s prominent Free Senior High School policy.
His selection is seen as a calculated decision aimed at bolstering the party’s campaign efforts, capitalizing on his experience and leadership qualities.
Recent polling data indicates that Dr. Prempeh enjoys strong support among grassroots members of the party.
