In a series of engagements with chiefs, youth, and stakeholders in the Jirapa, Sissala East, and West Constituencies, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice President of Ghana, outlined an ambitious new set of mining policies aimed at transforming the sector and ensuring greater benefits for the nation.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized that despite decades of mining activities, Ghana has not reaped the full potential benefits. To address this, he introduced a comprehensive policy package designed to revitalize the mining sector and empower local communities.
Key among the proposed initiatives is the establishment of a Mining Development Bank. This institution is expected to provide crucial financial support to the mining sector, fostering growth and sustainability. Additionally, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the importance of resourcing the Geological Survey Department to undertake major exploration activities. This move is aimed at identifying new mineral deposits and maximizing the country’s mining potential.
Another significant aspect of Dr. Bawumia’s policy is ensuring 100% Ghanaian ownership of proven reserves earmarked for small-scale mining. By doing so, the Vice President aims to empower local miners and ensure that the wealth generated from mining activities stays within the country, benefiting local communities and the national economy.
To further support small-scale miners, Dr. Bawumia proposed the establishment of plant pools in mining areas. These shared facilities will provide miners with access to necessary equipment and resources, promoting efficiency and productivity. Additionally, the decentralization of the mining licensing regime to all mining districts is expected to streamline the licensing process, making it more accessible and transparent.
In a bid to create more jobs and foster wealth creation, Dr. Bawumia also announced the promotion of licensed community mining schemes. These schemes will enable local communities to participate actively in mining activities, generating employment opportunities and contributing to the economic development of their regions.
Dr. Bawumia’s new mining policies were met with enthusiasm and support from the local chiefs, youth, and stakeholders. The Vice President’s vision for a transformed mining sector holds the promise of a brighter future for Ghana, where the benefits of mining activities are shared more equitably among its citizens.
“Indeed, it is possible,”
Dr. Bawumia concluded, expressing his confidence in the positive impact these policies will have on Ghana’s mining industry and overall economic growth.
As Dr. Bawumia continues his constituency-focused campaign, the people of Jirapa, Sissala East, and West Constituencies are hopeful that these new initiatives will bring about much-needed change and prosperity to their communities.
