Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia has inaugurated state-of-the-art information and communication technology (ICT) laboratories at the Akropong and Wa Methodist Schools for the Blind.
During his visit to the Akropong School for the Blind, Dr. Bawumia presented 104 specialized laptop computers to educators working with students with special needs, aimed at enhancing the teaching and learning experience.
The Vice President called on stakeholders to prioritize the educational requirements of persons with disabilities (PWDs), highlighting that this is not only a national duty but also essential for Ghana to meet its international commitments.
He reaffirmed the government’s dedication to identifying the most effective and innovative methods to support PWDs, which includes creating a supportive educational environment and providing necessary teaching aids.
The NPP flagbearer, recognized for his compassion and dedication to vulnerable populations, reiterated his resolve to continue advocating for the needs of individuals with disabilities and those who are disadvantaged in society.
As a country, we want to put issues of children with special needs on the development agenda and take steps to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) which is to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all.
The ICT Lab we are here to hand over is more than just a room filled with computers. It is a gateway to a world of possibilities, a platform for creativity and a beacon of hope for students with visual impairments to also navigate the digital landscape with confidence and ease.
Today, the actions we are taking here move us closer to our goal of ensuring inclusive education and access to all children regardless of ability.
Dr Bawumia emphasized the importance of prioritizing special education needs in order to alleviate the challenges faced by parents and guardians, as well as to enhance school accessibility.
I have proposed and will champion the recruitment and training of at least 1,000 more special education teachers, training teachers in language and speech therapy as well as occupational and behavioral therapy.
Mr Sammi Awuku, the CEO of the National Lottery Authority, praised Dr Bawumia’s humanitarian efforts and urged the Ministry of Education, the Ghana Education Service, and other entities to provide assistance to special needs schools.
He emphasized the potential of these children to make valuable contributions to the country’s progress. Additionally, as the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Akuapem North, he generously donated 600 White Canes to the Akropong School for the Blind.
