The Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has urged political leaders and members of the Democrat Union of Africa to collaborate in strengthening democratic institutions. He emphasized that the continent’s future hinges on their efforts and called for adherence to the rule of law and the creation of an environment where every African has a fair opportunity to succeed.
Dr. Bawumia made these remarks at a forum organized by the Democrat Union of Africa (DUA), an alliance of center-right political parties in Africa affiliated with the Global International Democracy Union (IDU), in Accra last Thursday.
The forum, held in partnership with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, was themed: “Strengthening Democratic Institutions for Political Stability; Crafting Africa’s Response.” This annual event, known for featuring influential figures who have advanced democracy, addresses critical emerging issues related to democracy and economic growth in Africa.
Dr. Bawumia reiterated his strong support and Ghana’s commitment to future DUA events, stating,
Together, we can continue to engage and collaborate to provide Africa with a blueprint for an exemplary democracy that serves as a model for the world.
He expressed his satisfaction with the alignment of political parties through DUA to build a united, progressive, and prosperous Africa. The Vice-President also extended his best wishes to political parties and candidates, including himself, as Ghana approaches its general elections in December.
He noted that Ghana’s strong democratic track record makes it a case study of both the successes and challenges of consolidating democracy in Africa. By leveraging Ghana’s experiences, Dr. Bawumia hopes the forum will inspire solution-oriented discussions and a shared commitment to strengthening democratic institutions across the continent.
Despite the challenges faced, Dr. Bawumia affirmed Ghana’s steadfast commitment to democratic principles.
Addressing the topic, “The Interplay of Democracy and Prosperity—Building a Thriving Nation,” former DUA Chairman Peter Mac Manu described democracy as the foundation of modern governance, influencing countries worldwide. He highlighted that democracy empowers citizens to participate in decision-making processes and enjoy fundamental human rights and freedoms.
Peter Mac Manu emphasized that democracy is not limited to electoral cycles and accountability but ensures that every individual’s voice is heard in national decision-making.
Co-Chair of DUA, Louisa Atta-Agyemang, expressed gratitude to the NPP leadership for their support of the union, praising their dedication to public service and youth empowerment. She affirmed the forum’s commitment to transparency, accountability, inclusivity, and the rule of
law.
