The vice presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mathew Opoku Prempeh, has expressed confidence in the party’s ability to achieve its ambitious goal of securing 85 percent of the votes in the Ashanti Region with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as the presidential candidate.
Speaking at the Ashanti Regional Campaign Working Committee Meeting and Women’s Conference in Kumasi on Sunday, August 11, Dr. Opoku Prempeh, also known as Napo, highlighted the strategic advantage of having Dr. Bawumia on the ticket.
He underscored Bawumia’s role in mobilizing support and strengthening the party’s stronghold in the region. Dr. Prempeh emphasized that the current administration’s social interventions, such as the Free SHS policy and the National Health Insurance Scheme, would be better protected under an NPP government.
Our opponents claimed that our party wouldn’t support a northerner as leader, but that agenda has failed. It’s not true that the NPP won’t back Bawumia. The Ashanti Region is firmly behind him. It’s easier for the NPP to achieve 85 percent in the Ashanti Region with Bawumia as the presidential candidate than ever before in the party’s history,
he stated. Dr. Prempeh urged that the NPP’s achievements in improving the lives of Ghanaians are evident and that Bawumia’s leadership will further enhance the party’s position. He called for a collective effort to ensure that these programs continue and that the goal of 85 percent in the Ashanti Region is met.
Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Wontumi, reaffirmed the party’s commitment to its goals.
Our target to win all forty-seven constituencies remains in motion. We need to deliver on it. The running mate has also set an 85 percent target, which we must achieve,
he declared. Historically, the Ashanti Region has been a stronghold for the NPP, with the highest percentage of votes ever achieved in a general election being 76.2%. The new target reflects the party’s ambition to not only maintain but significantly increase its dominance in the region.
Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, MP for Suame and Chairman of the NPP Manifesto Committee, noted that reaching the party’s ambitious target of 85 percent in the Ashanti Region depends on revitalizing the party’s organizational units. He stressed the need for a strong structure to support an effective door-to-door campaign.
Achieving 85 percent in the Ashanti Region is attainable, but it requires a well-organized party structure,” he said. “Our polling station agents have not been engaging with voters at their homes since the last elections. To reach our goal, we need to invigorate our organizational units and ensure our message reaches every voter.
It’s good to aim high. Looking at our performance in the past four elections, our best has been around 76 percent. We need to energize the party’s organizational units. That’s the only way to hit the target,
he added. Additionally, Chief of Staff Akosua Fremah Opare highlighted the critical role of the NPP’s Women’s Wing in achieving the set target. She emphasized that the women’s wing must play a central role in the campaign to help secure the desired outcome.
