DEMOCRACY HUB DEMONSTRATION: PARTICIPANTS POSSESSED HIDDEN AGENDAS

The representative for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr. Gideon Boako, has characterized the recent Democracy Hub protest as largely driven by political motives rather than a sincere concern for national issues.

His comments come in response to demonstrations aimed at highlighting the adverse impacts of illegal mining and calling for prompt government intervention, which led to the detention of several participants.

Dr. Boako contended that the objectives of the protest seemed to align more with political opposition than with genuine environmental advocacy. In an interview on Peace FM on Friday, September 27, he expressed his discontent regarding what he perceives as the manipulation of legitimate environmental concerns for political advantage.

He noted that while the issues related to illegal mining are indeed significant, the timing and nature of the protest appear to be intended to undermine the government’s credibility as elections draw near.

Dr. Boako emphasized that this political focus diverts attention from the crucial goal of protecting Ghana’s natural resources. He underscored the necessity of constructive dialogue between the government and the populace to achieve effective environmental stewardship.

He recognized that the government has made notable strides in combating illegal mining and safeguarding the nation’s resources, asserting that protests should not eclipse these ongoing initiatives.

Instead, he advocated for more collaborative strategies in conservation, urging all stakeholders to emphasize cooperation rather than divisive actions.
