Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has announced that the government will launch solar-powered outboard motors for fishermen nationwide in October this year.
The pilot phase will take place next month in Elmina, located in the Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem Constituency of the Central Region, where fishers will receive training on how to operate the new motors.
During his visit to the constituency, Dr. Bawumia, who is also the NPP’s presidential candidate, explained that these solar-powered motors were introduced to address the longstanding issues related to premix fuel.
For years, the artisanal fishing sector has faced challenges such as high costs, fuel shortages, and smuggling of premix fuel, and the introduction of these motors aims to alleviate these problems.
Dr. Bawumia further stated that the affordable solar-powered outboard motors would be available to fishermen through a hire-purchase scheme.

He added,
We’ll introduce a treasury scheme that will make it accessible to all, helping to resolve these persistent issues.
