DR. BAWUMIA’S PRESIDENCY WILL INTENSIFY EFFORTS AGAINST GALAMSEY – RICHARD AHIAGBAH

Galamsey has emerged as one of the most urgent environmental and socio-economic issues facing the country.

Although mining plays a crucial role in bolstering the national economy, the unregulated and illegal activities associated with galamsey pose numerous risks that must be addressed.

It is imperative for the government to escalate its efforts against galamsey, given the severe environmental repercussions, public health threats, economic detriments, and the erosion of law and order.

In this context, Richard Ahiagbah, the National Director of Communications for the ruling New Patriotic Party, has stated that the government has undertaken significant and decisive measures to combat the galamsey crisis.

He pointed out that the current unfavorable condition of Ghana’s water bodies should not be seen as a reflection of insufficient government action or dedication in the battle against galamsey, but rather as a consequence of the entrenched nature of illegal mining and its complex economic and political implications.

There are three verities to note in the fight to defeat galamsey…It threatens our collective future. The NDC has been fueling galamsey through their counter-political messaging around the galamsey menace for votes.

Ahiagbah highlighted that although the government has implemented proactive strategies such as regulatory enforcement, military interventions, and the promotion of alternative livelihoods through community mining initiatives, the battle against galamsey continues to be a complex challenge.

He underscored the necessity of ongoing collaboration with local communities, traditional leaders, and various stakeholders to effectively tackle this issue. He affirmed that, despite these challenges, the government is committed to restoring the nation’s water bodies and safeguarding the environment for future generations.

Nevertheless, Richard Ahiagbah’s perspective contrasts with the government’s stance, as President Akufo-Addo is currently under scrutiny for appearing to overlook the problem amid significant public concern.

Additionally, Richard Ahiagbah contended that placing a substantial portion of the blame for the current condition of Ghana’s water bodies on the opposition National Democratic Congress is simply acknowledging the obvious. He maintained that the NDC’s political strategies and inconsistent communication regarding the galamsey issue have hindered efforts to effectively address illegal mining.

But beyond the NDC sabotage, Dr. Bawumia plans to integrate the Chiefs, open more community mining and empower District Inspectorates in mining communities to guard, regulate and prevent irresponsible or illegal mining.

The Communications Director of the NPP underscored the importance of Ghanaians casting their votes for the NPP in the forthcoming December elections to secure a victory in the ongoing struggle against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.

The enthusiastic spokesperson expressed confidence that, through united determination and effective leadership, it is feasible to address the galamsey issue and create a more sustainable future for all citizens of Ghana.

He highlighted that the next NPP government, led by Bawumia, will not only persist in the fight against illegal mining but will also implement measures to significantly reduce its prevalence. Ahiagbah further asserted that under Bawumia’s guidance, there will be a renewed emphasis on developing sustainable strategies and enhancing collaboration among various stakeholders, including local communities and traditional leaders.
