The NPP flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that the first batch of solar-powered outboard motors for fishermen will arrive in the country by the end of this month.
According to Dr. Bawumia, these innovative motors will address the ongoing challenges related to pre-mix fuel in the fishing industry.
Speaking to chiefs, clergy, and constituents in North Tongu in the Volta Region, he explained,
We have partnered with manufacturers to bring in these outboard motors, and the initial batch, which will serve as a pilot project, will arrive by the end of this month.
He further stated,
We will demonstrate the functionality of these motors in various fishing communities. The solar-powered motors will operate without the need for pre-mix fuel. As you move on the water, the sun will charge your battery, eliminating the need to buy pre-mix fuel.
Dr. Bawumia also assured the fishing community that the issue of pre-mix fuel will soon be a thing of the past, adding,
We’ve registered all the canoes, approximately 22,000, and we will provide them with credit facilities to purchase these outboard motors.
During the event, the acting Paramount Chief of North Tongu, Dofo Kokoroko Ananse, requested improvements to roads and the creation of a new district, the Upper Tongu District, to enhance development and administrative efficiency.
Dr. Bawumia responded by affirming his commitment to resolve these challenges. He announced,
Every district will receive equipment, including excavators, graders, rollers, and tractors, to help maintain roads. This initiative is unprecedented, and it will significantly improve road conditions and motorability.
