The Vice President and NPP Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has inaugurated Phase 2 of Ghana’s first micro-hydropower plant.
Phase 2 of the project added a 75-kilowatt turbine to the existing 45-kilowatt turbine at the Tsatsadu Generating Station in Alavanyo Abenehease, located in the Hohoe Constituency of the Volta Region.
The Tsatsadu Generating Station was designed and built by engineers from the Bui Power Authority (BPA). The project involves an intake structure that channels water from the Tsatsadu River through a steel penstock to two turbines, producing a combined output of 120 kilowatts, which is fed into the national grid.
Dr. Bawumia emphasized the importance of renewable energy in reducing electricity costs and highlighted his commitment to expanding solar power generation if elected president. He pledged to add 2,000 megawatts of solar power to the national grid within his first four years in office, aiming to reduce electricity costs by 50% and ensure sufficient power for industrial growth.
He expressed his confidence in achieving this goal, stating,
I’m confident that, with the support of the Bui Power Authority, we will introduce 2,000 megawatts of solar power into the national grid within the first four years.
In addition to the hydropower plant, Dr. Bawumia also launched the Tsatsadu Center of Excellence, which will offer practical training in hydropower generation for tertiary students.
Bui Power Authority CEO, Samuel Kofi Dzamesi, praised his predecessor Fred Oware and former Energy Minister John Peter Amewu for their leadership in initiating the 45 kW micro-hydro plant, which was built entirely by Ghanaian engineers and funded by BPA’s internally generated revenue.
Dzamesi also announced the upcoming construction of a 3MWp hydropower plant at Wli Waterfalls to provide electricity for the Hohoe Constituency. He added that BPA will soon add 105 MW of solar power to the national grid, including 50 MW in Yendi, 50 MW at Bui, and a 5 MW floating solar project, the first of its kind in Africa, all under the Nana Addo/Bawumia administration.
Railways Minister and NPP Parliamentary Candidate for Hohoe, John Peter Amewu, encouraged the people of Hohoe to recognize the government’s efforts in developing the region and vote for the NPP in the upcoming December 7 elections. He also urged traditional authorities to support Dr. Bawumia’s bid for the presidency, which includes his promise to revise the Chieftaincy Act to grant chiefs more authority in resolving local disputes.
