The Vice President and Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is scheduled to inaugurate the Walewale Watermelon Factory in Walewale, situated in the North East Region, on Friday, November 22, 2024.
Dr. Bawumia had previously laid the foundation stone for the factory’s construction in 2019. With all installations and machinery now fully operational, the facility is prepared for its official opening.
The Walewale Watermelon Factory, which operates under Champion Foods and Beverages Limited—a company entirely owned by Ghanaians—forms part of the government’s prominent One District, One Factory (1D1F) industrialization program.
Upon commencing operations, the factory is projected to produce around 10 metric tonnes of watermelon and a variety of juice beverages each day.
The local community of Walewale and its neighboring areas, known for their rich watermelon cultivation, are poised to gain significantly. More than 3,000 smallholder farmers are anticipated to experience a reduction in post-harvest losses and an increase in their earnings through collaborations with the factory.
Furthermore, the facility is expected to create direct employment for over 400 individuals across different roles, thereby providing essential job opportunities for the youth and contributing to the region’s economic development.
