Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has paid tribute to the late President, H.E. Professor John Evans Atta Mills, by establishing a Memorial House and Library in his hometown of Ekumfi-Otuam, located within the Ekumfi Constituency of the Central Region.
The construction of this project, overseen by Mr. Koku Anyidoho, a close associate of the late President Mills and the CEO of the Atta Mills Institute, is positioned adjacent to the family residence of the late President, the Odumnaa Family, in Otuam, and is currently 90% complete.
On Thursday, November 21, 2024, Dr. Prempeh, affectionately known as NAPO, conducted a final inspection of the project in anticipation of its completion and upcoming inauguration.
He was joined by the Central Regional Minister, Hon. Justina MaryGold Assan, and the NPP parliamentary candidate for Ekumfi, Stelfa Nana Adu Donkor Okumkom. Nana Eniffua III, the Kyedomhemaa of the Ekumfi Asaman and Queen Mother of the Odumnaa Family, conveyed the family’s heartfelt appreciation to NAPO for honoring their son.
She also expressed gratitude to Koku Anyidoho for his steadfast support and loyalty to both his late boss and the family. The Abusua Panyin of the family, Kwabena Biney, voiced his disappointment that, apart from Koku Anyidoho and a few others, many individuals who were closely associated with President Mills, particularly prominent members of the NDC, including John Dramani Mahama, have neglected to pay tribute to the late President.
Koku Anyidoho, while praising NAPO for this commendable initiative, criticized the NDC and their presidential candidate, John Dramani Mahama, whom he characterized as the primary beneficiary of President Mills’ untimely death, for failing to take any action to honor the late President.
He noted that even the Asomdwe Park, the final resting place of President Mills, required his efforts to persuade the government of President Akufo-Addo to undertake necessary renovations.
The former administration of John Mahama, along with the funeral planning committee led by Totobi Kwakye, has yet to fulfill the payment obligations to the contractor responsible for constructing the Atta Mills Memorial Library in Cape Coast.
During a brief ceremony held at the family residence, NAPO expressed his intention to honor President Mills, recognizing him as a distinguished statesman whose contributions to the nation are significant, notwithstanding John Mahama’s efforts to claim credit for Mills’ achievements.
NAPO emphasized that it is the responsibility of all conscientious citizens to honor national heroes such as the late President. He asserted that President Mills’ life and legacy warrant thorough examination and preservation.
He pledged ongoing support to the family of the late President and to the people of Ghana in this endeavor.
