President Akufo-Addo has urged Ghanaians to evaluate the leadership record of former President John Mahama as he campaigns for re-election in the forthcoming 2024 general elections.
During an interaction with professional organizations and party supporters in Kumasi, which marked the beginning of his three-day tour of the Ashanti Region, the President pointed to Mr. Mahama’s prior administration as a contributing factor to his loss in the 2016 elections.
Four other people have had the blessing of the Almighty and the support of the people of Ghana to become Presidents,” President Akufo-Addo noted. “Jerry John Rawlings had a second term, John Agyekum Kufuor had a second term, and I have had a second term. The only one who was not given a second term was John Dramani Mahama. There is a reason for that—because Ghanaians were unhappy about his abysmal performance, which is why he was voted out.
The President raised concerns regarding Mr. Mahama’s commitments, specifically his suggestion of establishing a “24-hour economy,” while highlighting the notorious power crisis, commonly referred to as “dumsor,” that occurred during his administration.
Today, he is staging a comeback. What is he coming to do? A 24-hour economy? You couldn’t keep the lights on for 12 hours during ‘dumsor’ when you were President, and now you are coming to give us a 24-hour economy? How are you going to do that? Please, don’t let anybody confuse you with these things.
President Akufo-Addo utilized the occasion to reiterate his administration’s dedication to enhancing the quality of life for Ghanaians, highlighting progress made in areas such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.
His trip to the Ashanti Region is part of a broader initiative to connect with important stakeholders, evaluate current projects, and rally support for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in anticipation of the 2024 elections.
During this tour, he is anticipated to review and inaugurate several developmental initiatives and engage with traditional leaders.
