BAWUMIA LAUNCHES ELECTRIC BUSES TO SLASH PUBLIC TRANSPORT COSTS BY 50%

This reduction will, consequently, lead to a major decrease in public transport fares, offering much-needed relief to commuters.

Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has introduced a groundbreaking initiative in Ghana’s public transport sector with the launch of electric buses, designed to lower costs and promote sustainability.

During the event in Accra on Wednesday, November 27, Dr. Bawumia emphasized that this initiative reflects the government’s pledge to lower public transportation costs and alleviate the financial burden on Ghanaians.

The electric buses, which operate on charging systems instead of traditional fuel, are projected to reduce operational costs by as much as 50%. This reduction will, in turn, lead to a significant decrease in public transport fares, offering much-needed relief to commuters.

With the new buses powered through charging its electric system, and not through fuel, its operational cost will be reduced significantly, thus, also reducing the cost of public transport by 40% to 50%

The Vice President highlighted that this initiative extends beyond government-operated buses, creating opportunities for privately-owned bus and trotro operators to transition to electric vehicles. Additionally, plans are in place to set up electric charging stations at strategic locations across Accra, supporting the wider implementation of the program.

Dr. Bawumia also acknowledged the initial skepticism surrounding the initiative, assuring that the government is committed to proving the critics wrong.

If other countries could deploy electric buses to make life easier for their citizens, why not Ghana? With a mindset of possibility, we will, together, make many things possible and transform our country

He further stated that the launch of these buses is in line with the government’s broader plan to modernize infrastructure and tackle the urgent economic challenges faced by citizens.
