Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and presidential candidate of the NPP, has expressed his willingness to enact the contentious anti-gay bill into law upon assuming the presidency.
This legislation, which received unanimous approval from Parliament, is currently pending presidential approval; however, its progression has been hindered by a legal challenge regarding its constitutionality at the Supreme Court.
Despite this, Dr. Bawumia has made it clear that he intends to sign the bill into law if elected President. While addressing a large congregation at the Philadelphia Church in Kumasi on Sunday, Bawumia was forthright about his commitment to resolving this divisive issue.
There are so many issues which are dear to so many people and our father…There are two issues in Parliament which are of importance to many Ghanaians. One is the LGBTQ+ bill which is so dear to our father and Ghanaians. By the grace of God, when I come I will sign it immediately…Another issue which is so serious to our father and Ghanaians is the anti-witchcraft bill which I will sign as well.
Dr. Bawumia has consistently expressed his firm opposition to the LGBTQ+ movement in Ghana during his campaign, asserting that it contradicts the cultural and religious values upheld in the country.
