ACCRA’S HEALTHCARE SYSTEM AMONG TOP 10 IN AFRICA, THANKS TO DR. BAWUMIA’S POLICIES

Accra, the capital city of Ghana, has been ranked as the sixth-best city in Africa for healthcare systems according to the latest Health Care Index by City, published by Africa Facts Zone. This prestigious placement highlights the success of recent healthcare reforms and initiatives championed by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.

Under Dr. Bawumia’s leadership, the government has prioritized the modernization of healthcare facilities, the training of healthcare professionals, and the implementation of technology in healthcare management. Notable among them was in 2023 when he commissioned a one-million-dollar ($1m) catheterization laboratory, the most advanced Cath Lab in the country, and its accompanying Big Detector, dyna CT and roadmap software, and 3D workstation at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

These efforts have clearly borne fruit, as evidenced by Accra’s impressive position on the Numbeo’s Health Care Index, which assesses the overall quality of healthcare systems based on various performance metrics.

The NPP government’s focus has been particularly strong on expanding access to medical services in underserved areas and investing in digital health solutions, which have significantly improved patient care and healthcare delivery services. These advancements have not only elevated the standard of healthcare in Accra but have also set a benchmark for other African cities to aspire to.

Stakeholders in the healthcare sector have lauded these improvements, citing enhanced service delivery and increased patient satisfaction. The improved ranking is expected to boost investor confidence in Ghana’s healthcare sector and attract more international partnerships and funding for further development.

As Accra celebrates this achievement, the spotlight remains on Dr. Bawumia’s ongoing initiatives aimed at sustaining and expanding these healthcare reforms to ensure that Ghana continues to rise up the ranks of the world’s best healthcare systems.
