AFENYO-MARKIN: WE REFUSE TO PROVIDE THE NDC WITH THE LAWLESS PLATFORM IT DESIRES

The Majority Leader of Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has assured the public that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) will not permit the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to transform Parliament into a “lawless arena” amid rising tensions over parliamentary proceedings.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, 21 October, Afenyo-Markin underscored the NPP’s dedication to maintaining order and upholding democratic principles in response to recent disruptions in the chamber.

We are leaving this chamber peacefully into our offices, awaiting Mr. Speaker’s arrival,” he stated, reaffirming the party’s decision to handle matters calmly

If he calls leadership and we do precedent discussions, we will take it up from there, but for now, that lawless theater will not share with them because Ghana, our country, is bigger than any one individual

Afenyo-Markin further accused the NDC of attempting to undermine the democratic process, cautioning that the ruling party would not offer the opposition a platform to carry out such disruptions.

The country is hereby informed that we will not give that lawless platform that NDC is seeking

We will not give them that theater. They are so aggressively sick, disrupt democracy and to destroy our nation

We know there are innocent people out there, innocent Ghanaians going about their business, innocent Ghanaians in academia, innocent Ghanaians who are struggling to get three square meals on the table for their families. We care about them

We understand that there is politics, but we must do it in a civil manner. We believe that the appropriate thing is to quietly yield to them and wait upon Mr. Speaker. After all, the ruling was directed at Parliament and the Speaker, not an individual

The Deputy Majority Leader’s comments come amid escalating political tensions, as both parties gear up for further discussions under the direction of the Speaker of Parliament.
