ALL KIDNEY DIALYSIS PATIENTS TO RECEIVE ‘FREE DIALYSIS’ STARTING DEC 1 – BAWUMIA DISCLOSES

Vice President and NPP presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has announced that starting December 1, 2024, kidney dialysis treatments in Ghana will be covered at no cost under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

This decision follows growing concerns over the high costs of dialysis, which have made it challenging for many patients to afford essential treatment. Earlier this year, the government introduced a pilot program that provided free dialysis for individuals over 60 and under 18 through the NHIS.

Speaking to thousands of supporters in Suame during his Ashanti Region tour, Dr. Bawumia confirmed the successful completion of the six-month pilot program, announcing that, beginning December 1, dialysis treatments will be available free of charge to all patients nationwide.

“Many people suffer from kidney issues and require dialysis, but the costs are often prohibitive,” Dr. Bawumia explained. “Six months ago, we launched a pilot program to reduce dialysis expenses through the NHIS, and individuals over 60 and under 18 have benefited from free treatments since then.”

With the pilot program concluding, Dr. Bawumia emphasized, “From December 1, 2024, all kidney dialysis treatments will be free under the National Health Insurance Scheme.”
