The Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Council of Elders, Hackman Owusu-Agyemang, has advised supporters to show restraint and allow the flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, sufficient time to decide on his running mate.
Mr. Owusu-Agyemang stressed that only the presidential candidate will appear on the ballot paper, therefore, it is important to allow him to demonstrate his leadership and engage in extensive consultations first.
He further stated that the pressure on Dr. Bawumia to select a running mate is unfounded. During an appearance on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, Mr. Owusu-Agyemang highlighted that Dr. Bawumia is adhering to a specific process in choosing his vice presidential candidate, and urged those who are publicly vying for the position to refrain from doing so.
It has never happened before in the life of this particular party, the NPP, where there have been pressures and campaigns all over the place for who partners with him (Bawumia).
At the end of the day, it is Dr. Bawumia’s face and name that will be on the ballot paper. There are 16 regions; carrying out his duty as vice president, sometimes acting as president, and then going around takes a bit of time, so he needs time to do all these things and follow due process in consultation with the national council.
In the meantime, it has been revealed by members of the Dr. Bawumia campaign that the flagbearer intends to announce his running mate in the coming month.
Sammi Awuku, a senior campaign aide to the Flagbearer, shared this information during an interview on ‘Yen Nsempa’ on Onua FM on Tuesday, May 14.
However, it was later disclosed by Nana Akomea, the Vice Chairman of the Dr. Bawumia Campaign team, that the NPP flagbearer will submit a name to the party’s National Council for consideration as his running mate by the end of June.
