According to Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), is committed to signing an agreement to stop galamsey, or illicit mining.
Mr. Aboagye emphasized Dr. Bawumia’s steadfast dedication to eliminating the threat.
In an interview with Joy FM’s Newsnight, Mr. Aboagye emphasized that, more than any other political person, Dr. Bawumia has visited multiple mining sites in the last six months to gain firsthand knowledge of the problem.
“His position on illegal mining is very clear. He has repeatedly outlined specific strategies, evaluating what has worked and what hasn’t since 2010. Based on this, he has proposed detailed processes that he believes can effectively end the problem. He is ready and willing to sign any necessary pact,” he indicated.
This declaration comes in response to the Media Coalition Against Galamsey’s demands that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the NPP sign a legally-binding pact to combat galamsey head-on.
In response to Mr. Aboagye’s remarks, Coalition Convener Kenneth Ashigbey said, “I am happy the Vice President is ready, and we are going to get that.”
