Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), paid tribute to the late S.G. Antor by laying a wreath at Logba in the Afadjato South Constituency. Dr. Bawumia recognized the late S.G. Antor, a founding member of the NPP, as a man of “sacrifice” for his significant contributions to the party and the nation.
Born in 1931, S.G. Antor was known for his bravery and strong opposition to the late Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s ideals, which led to his arrest. His release was secured through the intervention of the British government. Antor’s dedication and hard work paved the way for the formation of the United Party (UP) tradition, although he later lost his life.
The Vice President and NPP flagbearer honored his memory by laying a wreath, stating, “He opposed Nkrumah from 1957 when he was a member of Parliament for the area, which was then known as the Kpando North Constituency.”
Dr. Bawumia recalled, “Nkrumah ordered his arrest for treason in 1957. S.G. Antor appealed to the international court at The Hague. He was arrested again and placed in detention in 1966 but was released after the 1966 coup. So, this is a man that has sacrificed. When you look at his life history, he has sacrificed for Logba, he has sacrificed for this region, he has sacrificed for Ghana.”
Reflecting on his visit, Dr. Bawumia added, “As I am campaigning in Afadjato South, where he was born in Logba, I cannot come here without first paying homage to one of our founding fathers. I am here with my delegation to honor him and lay a wreath on his grave.”
Assuring the community, he said, “I want to assure the people of Logba that we will not forget you. As President, I will not forget you. The sacrifices of S.G. Antor will be remembered in how we develop this country.”
The traditional leaders and chiefs commended Dr. Bawumia for recognizing S.G. Antor’s contributions, while also urging him to address the challenges faced by the Logba community.
Following the ceremony, the NPP flagbearer visited the local markets, interacting with traders and encouraging them to support the NPP in the upcoming elections.
