Speaking at the 14th Commonwealth Regional Conference for Heads of Anti-Corruption Agencies in Africa, Dr. Bawumia underscored the significance of utilizing digital tools in the fight against corruption, encouraging other member states to adopt Ghana’s strategy.
The NPP flagbearer also addressed the challenges encountered during the digitalization process, revealing incidents of sabotage by ECG employees who introduced malware into the system. Dr. Bawumia detailed how national security interventions were crucial in resolving the issue, ultimately leading to the apprehension of the perpetrators.
Can you believe that workers within the system sabotaged it, they put ransomware into the whole system. And the system essentially collapsed.
We had to send in national security to eventually find that it was some of the staff at the IT department who were culpable.
Highlighting the impact of the malware, he emphasized the prompt and efficient actions taken by the government to restore and digitize the system. Dr. Bawumia underscored the shift from cash payments for electricity, emphasizing the preference for mobile money and electronic bank transfers as the new payment methods.
Expressing astonishment, he pointed out the significant rise in revenue collection, providing the transformation from GH¢450 million to over a billion cedis per month as a testament to the triumph of the digitalization initiatives.
