DR. BAWUMIA CALLS FOR DRIVER’S LICENCE RENEWAL REFORMS TO EASE BURDEN ON MOTORISTS

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Ghana’s Vice President and the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2024 Presidential Candidate, is calling for a re-evaluation of the current driver’s licence renewal process. He highlights the inconvenience it poses for drivers and advocates for a longer renewal period.

During an address to chiefs and stakeholders in Boadua, Akwatia Constituency, Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia criticized the existing system, where drivers are required to renew their licenses every two years.

He proposed extending the renewal period to 8 or 10 years, stating, “It does not make sense to have to renew your driver’s licence every two years. We should make sure that drivers can hold their licenses for a longer period without the need for frequent renewals.”

In contrast to Ghanaian passports, which are renewed every ten years, driver’s licenses are currently renewed every two years. This system, enforced by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), has led to numerous complaints from drivers about the harassment they face from DVLA officials and the police due to non-renewal.

Dr. Bawumia’s proposal aims to reduce these challenges and streamline the process for Ghanaian motorists, making it less cumbersome and more in line with the renewal timelines for other essential documents like passports.
