DR. BAWUMIA: DIGITALIZATION KEY TO SOLVING LAND ADMINISTRATION CHALLENGES

Flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has reiterated that digitalization is the solution to Ghana’s long-standing land administration challenges. Speaking at the commissioning of the new Lands Commission head office in Accra, he highlighted the transformative impact of technology in streamlining land processes and improving efficiency.

Dr. Bawumia recalled a visit to the Lands Commission’s office, where he observed piles of files and inadequate space for operations.

He noted that the Commission’s reliance on manual systems was a major obstacle to progress.

We cannot move forward if we do not tackle these challenges,

he stated.

The Flag-bearer pointed to digital initiatives introduced by the Commission, such as a corporate portal for processing mortgage and land applications and an online platform for licensed surveyors to submit bar-coded plans.

These systems, he explained, have reduced delays, minimized the involvement of unlicensed practitioners, and enhanced transparency.

These are just a few examples of how we can transform land administration through digitalization adding that these efforts would make homeownership more accessible to Ghanaians

He expressed confidence that the new systems, combined with the state-of-the-art office building, would enable the Lands Commission to establish a robust and efficient land administration system.

The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Dr. Abu Jinapor emphasized the need to continue digitizing the Lands Commission’s operations.

He said relying on manual records was outdated and would prevent Ghana from achieving a strong land administration system.The Minister also mentioned the importance of updating the country’s National Land Policy, which was last reviewed in 1999.He assured the public that efforts were underway to modernize the policy to meet current challenges.
