Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer, has pledged that his administration will launch a “Buy Ghana First” policy to drive job creation.
Speaking to a crowd at the Borteyman Sports Complex, Dr. Bawumia detailed his plans to leverage this policy, which would be backed by law, and implemented across both public and private sectors.
“We will introduce a new policy using government purchasing power to stimulate industrial growth and business expansion through the ‘Buy Ghana First’ initiative,” he explained.
This policy mandates that all public sector procurement will prioritize goods and services produced locally, ensuring that Ghanaian businesses are the primary suppliers.
Reflecting on his recent visit to the Volta Textile company in Juapong, Dr. Bawumia shared that the company expressed concern over the decline in local patronage, as schools and companies increasingly import textiles. This feedback, he said, inspired the “Buy Ghana First” policy, aiming to revitalize the local industry and boost job creation.
“We will enforce this by law,” Dr. Bawumia affirmed. “If the Ministry of Education needs uniforms for students, they will first seek out local textile companies and tailors, putting Ghanaian businesses first.”
