Vice President and Presidential Candidate of the NPP, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reiterated his commitment to recognizing the Church and all faith-based organizations as essential partners in national development.
During a courtesy call on the Catholic Bishop of the Sunyani Diocese and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Most Rev. Mathew Kwesi Gyamfi, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the importance of collaboration between the government and religious bodies.
The visit, which took place ahead of his campaign in the Bono Region, underscored the Vice President’s desire to strengthen ties with faith-based organizations. He acknowledged the church’s significant role in shaping society and sought the Bishop’s prayers and spiritual blessings to guide his endeavors.
The Vice President stated, “Churches have built more schools and perhaps hospitals among others, more than even international development partners.” He also praised the Catholic Church for producing St. James Seminary, recognized as the best senior high school in West Africa. Dr. Bawumia assured that under his presidency, churches would receive support through tax incentives for importing materials for such noble causes.
Dr. Bawumia further reiterated his pledge to run an open-door government if elected, promising that all faith-based organizations would have equal and unfettered access to his office.
Most Rev. Mathew Kwesi Gyamfi expressed his gratitude for the Vice President’s visit, noting it was the first time a sitting vice president had called on him. He commended Dr. Bawumia’s efforts to build stronger relationships with religious organizations and reaffirmed the church’s commitment to working with the government towards inclusive development.
The Bishop emphasized that the church remains committed to supporting initiatives that uplift communities and contribute to national progress.
Very Rev. Father Thomas Oppong Febiri, Vicar General of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, was also present during the visit.
