In an effort to foster peace and stability ahead of Ghana’s general elections scheduled for December 7, Vice President and Presidential Candidate Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is poised to sign a peace agreement on Thursday, November 28, 2024.
This initiative arises in the context of escalating tensions and apprehensions regarding the possibility of violence during the electoral period. The peace agreement, to be executed under the auspices of the National Peace Council, represents a dedication to facilitating a peaceful electoral process.
This will mark the fourth peace agreement signed since the 2012 general elections, and it is anticipated to send a constructive message to the supporters of various parties and candidates, encouraging the prevention of violence and the promotion of national unity.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, the spokesperson for the Bawumia Campaign, stated that the Vice President remains committed to signing the peace agreement, notwithstanding the ongoing discussions and debates surrounding the matter.
In spite of all the back and forth and the conversations going on, we have just one Ghana.
Aboagye highlighted in an interview on Joy FM that the signing of the peace agreement represents a crucial advancement towards fostering peace and stability during the electoral process.
By endorsing the agreement, political parties and their leaders commit to honoring the electoral framework, accepting the election results, and addressing any arising disputes through non-violent means.
This development follows former President and NDC Presidential Candidate, John Mahama’s, criticism of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia for not attending the launch of the National Peace Campaign earlier this month.
Mahama contended that their presence was essential, considering their responsibilities in maintaining national security and peace. Nevertheless, Mahama has declined to endorse the peace agreement.
