Sammy Awuku, a senior campaign aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has revealed that the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will imminently unveil his running mate for the upcoming December general elections.
Awuku suggested that Dr. Bawumia has already made a decision regarding his running mate and will introduce him to the public shortly. These statements have emerged amidst widespread speculation within the NPP and among political analysts regarding the apparent delay in the selection of a running mate.
The delay has triggered debates about potential candidates and the potential impact on the party’s electoral chances. However, Awuku has assured that Dr. Bawumia is operating within an appropriate timeframe to announce his running mate.
He referenced past occurrences, highlighting how then-candidate Nana Akufo-Addo chose Dr. Bawumia as his running mate in August 2008 for that year’s election.
He contended that this instance demonstrates the variability in the timing of such announcements and should not necessarily be a cause for concern.
We are very much within the timeline. Dr Mahamudu Bawumia was elected barely six months ago, so we still have time. If you recall, his nomination in 2008 was done somewhere in August. So, for us in the NPP, we are very much within our timelines.
It can be tomorrow, it can be next week, it can be next month, it can be three days from now. The flagbearer at this point is very clear in his mind who his running mate is going to be, and when he is ready, he is going to announce that.
