Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has praised the NPP flagbearer, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his initiative to enhance the authority of traditional leaders during his potential presidency.
Dr. Bawumia has committed to revising the Chieftaincy Act to enable Chiefs to have a more significant role in governance at both the local and national levels.
This initiative has garnered widespread support throughout the nation. In his address to the Ghanaian populace on various matters, President Kufuor emphasized that this proposal would greatly benefit the institution of Chieftaincy.
It is laudable and a good proposal…I don’t know if you have observed that now, from the coast to North East to West, our Chiefs and Queen mothers are well-educated and knowledgeable.
I am a politician, and I am not afraid to say that Ghanaians are currently suspicious of politicians. They assume politicians are corrupt, but they have enormous respect for our traditional leaders. Our Chiefs command so much respect.
In Accra, the Chiefs command respect, and so is the situation in the Akan areas, whether Akropong, Asante, Akyem, Akwamu, or Kwahu; look at how people respect the Chiefs. Go to Bono to Gonja, Dagomba, Wa, Western, etc.; the people respect the traditional rulers.
President Kufuor stated that Dr. Bawumia has demonstrated a clear understanding of the nation’s value system and is confident in his ability to accomplish many objectives with the support of the Chiefs.
