Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has unveiled a visionary plan aimed at empowering Ghana’s youth for the digital economy, addressing the country’s unemployment challenges head-on.
Speaking in Wa during a rally as part of his campaign tour of the Upper West Region, Dr. Bawumia announced a comprehensive agenda to train at least one million youth in digital skills. His tour commenced on Monday, July 22, and was expected to conclude on Thursday, July 25, 2024.
A massive crowd gathered at the Wa Tendamba Junior High School Park to welcome Dr. Bawumia and his campaign team. The atmosphere was electric as the Vice President addressed the enthusiastic supporters, predominantly young people.
In his address, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the NPP government’s commitment to ensuring every child and young person in Ghana receives an education, regardless of economic status, through the Free Senior High School policy. He emphasized that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to build a literate society ready to capitalize on the digital age.
“This election is a simple choice: do we want to go into the future, into the digital age, or do we want to go back into the ‘akonfem’ (guinea fowl) age? Do you want to go forward or backward? We want to go forward; we want to change this country. I want to build an economy that can create jobs for the youth, and that is why we are digitalizing the economy. We are building a new Ghana; we want to make sure our youth are educated. My brothers, my sisters, we are talking about the future, and the future is about the youth,”
Dr. Bawumia passionately explained.
He also announced plans to enhance internet connectivity in all communities and abolish taxes on mobile phones to ensure every Ghanaian youth has access to a smartphone, a crucial tool for thriving in the digital economy.
Dr. Bawumia further underscored the NPP’s commitment to education by restoring teacher and nursing trainee allowances, which had been canceled by the previous administration. This move, he argued, demonstrates the party’s dedication to providing educational opportunities for all Ghanaians.
He called on the electorate in the Upper West Region to support him in the December 7, 2024 election, enabling him to implement his plans and improve the living conditions of Ghanaians.
Hajia Humu Awudu, the NPP Parliamentary Candidate for the Wa Central Constituency, also addressed the youth, emphasizing that voting for her and Dr. Bawumia would mean voting for job creation and better opportunities. She criticized the current MP, Dr. Hassan Rashid Pelpuo, for not adequately addressing youth unemployment in the constituency, urging a change in leadership on December 7, 2024.
