Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), emphasized the transformative impact of the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy during a stakeholder engagement in the Ledzokuku constituency today.
As part of his constituency-focused tour ahead of the December 7 elections, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the successes of this flagship policy, describing it as a game-changer in Ghana’s educational sector. He noted that when the NPP was elected, the total number of students in senior high schools was 800,000, achieved over a span of 60 years.
Senior High School is now free, for the last eight years, many more children have been able to enroll in senior high school.
When we were elected, the total enrollment in senior high schools across Ghana was 800,000, that is from independence in 1957 to 2016—a span of 60 years—the total enrollment stood at 800,000.
Dr. Bawumia went on to highlight the significant progress made since the introduction of the Free SHS policy by the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration.
However, after we implemented the Free SHS, enrollment increased from 800,000 to 1.4 million students in 2023
The Free SHS policy, a major social intervention introduced by the NPP government, has been a cornerstone of President Akufo-Addo/Bawumia’s administration and a key achievement that Dr. Bawumia continues to champion on his campaign trail. This policy has enabled millions of Ghanaian children, who otherwise would have been unable to afford secondary education, to access quality education without financial burden. The results are evident: a sharp increase in the number of students enrolling in senior high schools across the country.
Dr. Bawumia’s message in Ledzokuku reinforces the NPP’s commitment to investing in human capital development and providing equal opportunities for all Ghanaians. By making education accessible to every child, regardless of their financial background, the NPP aims to build a stronger, more prosperous Ghana.
As Dr. Bawumia’s constituency-focused tour continues, his message of educational empowerment, economic growth, and inclusive development remains clear. The Free SHS policy is not just a campaign talking point; it is a demonstration of the NPP’s commitment to tangible progress and a brighter future for every Ghanaian child. Dr. Bawumia’s leadership is centered on ensuring that Ghana continues on a path of growth, development, and prosperity.
