Richard Ahiagbah, the Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has alleged that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) is complicit in the ongoing galamsey crisis.
He asserted that the NDC capitalized on the galamsey issue for political advantage during the lead-up to the 2020 elections by making commitments that incentivized illegal mining activities.
He emphasized that such actions have played a significant role in the current difficulties Ghana faces in combating the galamsey problem.
I think that the NDC cannot absolve itself of responsibility of where we are. You heard in 2020 when we were doing the election, they were leveraging galamsey as a means to winning the election. They were peddling galamsey to people telling them to vote for us when we come we will liberate you to do it.
He claimed that the circumstances would have deteriorated had the NDC emerged victorious in the election, as they would have honored commitments made to illegal miners.
In urging for effective actions to address the issue, Mr. Ahiagba emphasized the necessity of a joint effort between the government and pertinent stakeholders.
