President Nana Akufo-Addo has stated that he neither possesses the authority nor the desire to impose any individual upon the citizens of Ghana as a candidate for the presidency in the upcoming elections scheduled for December 7.
As President, I cannot impose anybody on you. I don’t have the power, and I don’t have the interest. Just as I was elected, the next person to stand here in my shoes will also be elected by the people of Ghana.
But I believe that as an 80-year-old man who has been a two-term President of Ghana and who has been involved in a lot of Ghana’s recent history, certainly in the history of the Fourth Republic, I am in a good position to advise who should come and stand in my shoes.
The President made these remarks while addressing various stakeholders, including members of the clergy and the Upper West Regional House of Chiefs, during his visit to the region.
President Akufo-Addo visited the area to express his gratitude to the stakeholders for their support throughout his eight-year leadership and for the collaboration that contributed to the maintenance of peace and security during his administration.
He noted that, given the government’s initiatives in sectors such as road infrastructure, agriculture, education, and health, he is confident that Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s flagbearer, is well-positioned to further advance the development agenda initiated by his administration. President Akufo-Addo praised Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as
A hard-working, honest, trustworthy man.
Dr. Bawumia possesses extensive expertise and significant experience in economic policy and management, and he is recognized as a person of exceptional loyalty, having collaborated closely with him for nearly two decades.
President Akufo-Addo emphasized that Dr. Bawumia, in his capacity as Vice President, has been integrally involved in nearly all the initiatives implemented by his administration and is therefore well-prepared to carry them forward to achieve the desired outcomes.
He pointed out that former President Mahama, who is Dr. Bawumia’s main rival, had previously held the presidency but was dismissed by the electorate in both 2016 and 2020 due to his inability to deliver results, underscoring the necessity for Ghanaians to once again reject him.
President Akufo-Addo also criticized John Mahama for his previous strong opposition to the Free Senior High School policy and the associated investments, noting that Mahama now claims he would enhance and refine the program if he were to regain power.
