Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Presidential Candidate of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), has reaffirmed his position regarding LGBTQ+ issues, asserting that he will not endorse such practices if elected in the upcoming December 7 elections.
This declaration was made during his visit to the Chief’s palace in Sefwi Akontombra, located within the Akontombra Constituency of the Western North Region.
Dr. Bawumia’s visit marks the second day of his official tour of the Western North region. While addressing traditional leaders, religious figures, and the Muslim community in Akontombra, he emphasized that both Christian and Muslim teachings do not support LGBTQ+ practices.
Furthermore, Dr. Bawumia pledged that, if elected, he would transform the Cocoa Rehabilitation Centre into a Cocoa Research Institute to better support local cocoa farmers. He highlighted various policy initiatives introduced by the NPP government, including the Free Senior High School program, the implementation of the Ghana Card, Cocoa Rehabilitation efforts, the provision of free laptops for students and teachers, and the restoration of allowances for teacher trainees.
He contrasted his candidacy with that of former President Mahama, suggesting that voting for Mahama would be a choice for a “second-hand president,” while his candidacy represents a fresh approach with innovative ideas and policies. Additionally, the NPP Presidential candidate assured traditional leaders that he would involve them more closely in governance if elected, promising to restore the authority of traditional leaders and ensure that Paramount Chiefs and Queen Mothers receive monthly salaries.
Nana Kwabena Ebi II, the Chief of Sefwi Akontombra, praised Dr. Bawumia and the NPP administration led by President Akufo-Addo for their significant developmental initiatives. He urged Dr. Bawumia to consider appointing the current Member of Parliament for Akontombra, Hon. Alexander Djornobuah Tetteh, as a cabinet minister should he win the presidency on December 7. Additionally, he requested that the town park in Sefwi Akontombra be upgraded to AstroTurf to provide relief to the local MP.
The Vice President, undeterred by the inclement weather, spoke to the large gathering of NPP supporters and pledged to transform the Akontombra town park into an Astro tuff park, as requested by Nana Kwabena Ebi II.
He subsequently encouraged the constituents to cast their votes in large numbers for both himself and the local Member of Parliament to ensure the continuation of the positive initiatives implemented by President Akufo-Addo.
Honorable Alexander Djornobuah Tetteh, the Member of Parliament for the region, also called upon his constituents to support Dr. Mahmoud Bawumia, emphasizing that he is the only presidential candidate with a clear vision and a genuine commitment to the welfare of Ghana.
