MAHAMA ALMOST COLLAPSED NHIS BUT WE HAVE REVIVED IT – DR. BAWUMIA

The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has asserted that the government has revitalized and reinforced the National Health Insurance Scheme.

Originally established by the New Patriotic Party during the presidency of John Agyekum Kufuor, the scheme encountered significant payment challenges following the transition of power to the National Democratic Congress, which had pledged a one-time premium.

While addressing stakeholders in the Suame Constituency of the Ashanti Region on Sunday, Dr. Bawumia remarked that the NPP inherited a scheme that had been dismantled during the tenure of John Mahama, but it has since been restored under the current administration.

The National Health Insurance Scheme was virtually collapsed under Mahama but we have revived and strengthened it. We have put in so much money…Today, sicknesses that were not under the NHIS are today under the the NHIS. Childhood cancer that is children with cancer is now free under he National Health Insurance Scheme.

Sickle cell sufferers also have a drug they use called hydroxy urea. It is a very expensive drug but very potent for sickle cell sufferers. We have negotiated and we are giving these drugs to sickle cell sufferers free under the NHIS.

Dr. Bawumia further declared that following a successful six-month pilot program providing free kidney dialysis through the NHIS scheme for individuals aged over 60 and under 18, kidney dialysis will be offered at no cost starting December 1, 2024.
