A lecturer at the University for Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Mohammed Tawfik Adamu, has urged the Ghanaian electorate to remain skeptical of John Mahama’s abrupt reversal regarding the Free SHS initiative, asserting that this change of stance is motivated solely by the impending December 7 elections.
During an interview on Dreamz FM in the Upper East Region, Mr. Tawfik remarked that John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the opposition National Democratic Congress, has adopted the Free SHS program due to research findings suggesting that this pro-poor policy could significantly influence the outcome of the forthcoming elections.
He emphasized that this insight is the reason behind Mahama’s newfound support for Free SHS.
It is only the fool who changes his mind in the year of elections” Mr. Tawfik stated, in response to the host making the point that only a fool does not change his mind. Continuing.
It is true that it is only a fool who doesn’t change his mind, but I am telling you that it is only the fool who changes his mind when he is just about going into elections, and I am telling you, these are some of the political gimmicks. The reason why the NDC is doing a sudden U-turn is because they have seen how Free SHS is winning the heart and soul of many Ghanaians. They have seen that this election is about Free SHS, it is about having education, students having access to quality education. It is about helping the poor get access to quality education.
The lecturer from the Department of Information and Communications Studies at UPSA strongly advised Ghanaian parents to be wary of the deceptive tactics employed by the NDC and their presidential candidate, asserting that their motives regarding Free SHS are not genuine.
Mr. Wilson Dabuo, a lecturer at the University of Education, Winneba, noted that while the idea of Free Education has been documented in our literature, no previous government, prior to the Akufo-Addo administration, took decisive action to implement it as the NPP government has accomplished.
Free SHS has been in the history books, in the constitution, pretentiously named as FCUB but never has it been implemented in the manner that the Akufo-Addo/Bawumia administration has done it.
He seized the opportunity to encourage parents and beneficiaries of the Free SHS initiative to support Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and the parliamentary candidates of the New Patriotic Party, emphasizing that this would ensure the policy’s continued protection.
He expressed concern that if John Mahama and the National Democratic Congress were to regain power, they would jeopardize the Free SHS program.
The two lecturers are affiliated with a group called University Lecturers for Free SHS, which is dedicated to raising awareness among voters about the advantages of the Free SHS initiative and the importance of maintaining NPP governance to safeguard the program. Teams are currently active in the Central, Upper East, and Northern regions to carry out this awareness campaign.
