Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, affectionately known as NAPO, is scheduled to be officially introduced as the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during a highly anticipated event on Tuesday, July 9.
The unveiling of NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate will take place in Kumasi, the capital of the Ashanti Region, which is a stronghold of the NPP. Francis Adomako, the Ashanti Regional Organizer of the NPP, has expressed the region’s eager anticipation for the event.
On Friday, July 5, the National Council of the NPP formally endorsed NAPO as Dr. Bawumia’s running mate, a decision that has garnered widespread praise from senior party officials. President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has conveyed his confidence in their leadership abilities, affirming their capability to guide the party to victory in the 2024 general elections.
Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh expressed deep gratitude to Dr. Bawumia for entrusting him with the role of serving as his running mate. NAPO vowed his steadfast commitment to collaborating closely with Dr. Bawumia to secure a decisive victory for the party in the upcoming elections.
The New Patriotic Party has staunchly defended NAPO against criticisms of perceived arrogance. In response to the negative feedback, some stakeholders have proposed that NAPO use prepared scripts for future public appearances to carefully manage his communications and reduce the risk of potential mistakes.
Furthermore, the New Patriotic Party has officially initiated the nomination process for the Manhyia South constituency following Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s appointment as the party’s running mate.
The Manhyia South Parliamentary seat remains vacant, pending an official declaration by Parliament.
The party has assured a transparent electoral process and advised prospective candidates to exercise caution in their statements, emphasizing the internal nature of the matter.
Reports indicate that NAPO’s brother, Nana Owusu Afriyie Prempeh, is seeking the same parliamentary seat, potentially leading to a familial rivalry in politics.
The stage is set for a highly competitive presidential election in 2024, featuring the New Patriotic Party’s duo of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia and Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), up against the National Democratic Congress (NDC) ticket of former President John Dramani Mahama and Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
