NDC’S REFUSAL TO SIGN PEACE ACCORD REVEALS FEARS OVER BAWUMIA’S RISING POPULARITY – AKBAR YUSSIF KHOMEINI

Akbar Yussif Rohullah Khomeini, an aide to Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has stated that the rising popularity and nationwide momentum of Dr. Bawumia’s campaign have forced the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to revise its strategy ahead of the 2024 elections.

Speaking on GHOne TV, Khomeini stated that the NDC’s reluctance to commit to a peace accord—a practice that has become a staple in Ghanaian elections—reveals a lack of confidence in their chances of winning.

He further added that in Ghana’s Fourth Republic, it has been a tradition for opposition parties confident of victory to advocate for peace accords that ensure a smooth transition of power. However, the 2024 elections present an unusual scenario. The NDC, which once expressed overconfidence in winning, is now hesitating to push for any peace declaration. Khomeini argues that this hesitation is a sign of weakness and uncertainty within the party, especially in light of the overwhelming support and enthusiasm that Dr. Bawumia’s campaign is generating across the country.

When the opposition is convinced of victory, they usually lead the charge for peace declarations to commit the ruling party to a peaceful transition

The fact that the NDC is not doing this now shows they are not confident. It’s a cover-up for their internal struggles and lack of certainty about their chances in the upcoming elections.

Khomeini further explained that the NDC’s current posture contrasts sharply with their earlier stance. ”

Just a year or two ago, they were so confident they even talked about not needing to campaign. Their national executives were already talking about sharing positions within their ranks, but things have clearly changed.

Meanwhile, Dr. Bawumia’s campaign continues to build momentum. His message of hope, digital transformation, and economic growth has resonated with many Ghanaians, presenting a clear contrast to the NDC’s wavering stance. Dr. Bawumia’s commitment to progress and development has been evident throughout his campaign, positioning him as a visionary leader ready to take Ghana into a new era.

As the NDC grapples with its lack of confidence, the NPP remains focused on delivering a message of possibility and progress, guided by the experienced leadership of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. His ability to connect with the electorate and articulate a clear vision for Ghana’s future only strengthens the NPP’s position ahead of the 2024 elections.
