ONE TABLET PER STUDENT POLICY: MORE TABLETS FOR SCHOOLS IN THE ASHANTI REGION

Two more senior high schools (SHS) in the Ashanti Region have been provided with computer tablets and accessories.

This forms part of the government’s One Student One Tablet initiative, which was launched by President Nana Akufo-Addo in March.

With this latest batch of tablets, the total number of schools in the Ashanti Region benefiting from the first phase of the program has reached 18, including both senior high and technical and vocational education and training (TVET) schools.

Although several schools have already received the tablets, distribution to students has been delayed, prompting concerns from members of Parliament’s education committee.

Asanteman Senior High School in Kumasi confirmed it has received 4,404 tablets, while Konongo Odumase Senior High School received 4,256 tablets along with accessories.

In addition, 16 other schools across the region have also confirmed receipt of tablets, though student distribution is yet to begin.

hool officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, have suggested that full distribution and usage of the tablets will likely begin once the admission process for first-year students in the 2024/25 academic year is completed.

This marks an important step in the broader rollout of the One Student One Tablet initiative, which is part of Ghana’s push to digitalise education and harness the opportunities of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The tablets are set to provide students with access to digital textbooks and other learning resources to enhance their studies.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Education, the government is working to upgrade public senior high schools into Smart Schools, with plans to construct new facilities where needed. These modernized schools will be equipped with digital tools such as Smart Boards, computers, and internet connectivity to foster a more interactive and tech-enabled learning environment.
