OPPOSITION PANICS OVER DR. BAWUMIA’S MEETING WITH POPE FRANCIS

The Opposition has expressed discontent with the recent working visit of the flagbearer of the ruling New Patriotic Party and Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia to the Republic of Italy and the Vatican State to meet Pope Francis.

In response, they have resorted to a political caricature strategy to divert attention from Dr. Bawumia’s visit by sharing images of their Presidential Candidate, during his meeting with Pope Francis when he was President. Dr. Bawumia’s trip to Rome and The Vatican aimed at enhancing the longstanding relations between Ghana, Italy, and the Vatican State.

In a press release by the Vice President’s Spokesperson Gideon Boako, it was mentioned that Dr. Bawumia was scheduled to engage in bilateral discussions with prominent dignitaries, including a meeting with His Holiness Pope Francis.

Following the meeting with Pope Francis in Rome, the Vice President, Dr. Bawumia, posted on his Facebook page on Wednesday afternoon, stating, “This significant encounter provided me with the opportunity to address various national and global matters with Pope Francis, and to reinforce Ghana’s enduring ties with the Vatican State and the Pope.”

He elaborated, “I also had a session with the Vatican Secretary for Relations with States and International Organizations, HE Paul Richard Gallagher, and Ghana’s own Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson, who graciously gave me a tour of the Vatican. Pope Francis offered prayers for Ghana and its leaders.” Shortly after the Vice President shared images of his meeting with Pope Francis, the opposition utilized Facebook to share old photographs of the opposition and his spouse, during their encounter with Pope Francis when he served as the President of Ghana.

Furthermore, the opposition members initiated a series of attacks on Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, mocking him while sharing photos of their flagbearer on Facebook with various captions to taunt Dr. Bawumia.

Interestingly, instead of defending their 72-year-old Running Mate who was being criticized on social media, the opposition redirected their focus towards Dr. Bawumia to ridicule him.

With a clear political agenda, the opposition Director of Elections, Dr. Omane Boamah, also targeted the Vice President on his Facebook page, launching personal attacks against him. On the other hand, members of the New Patriotic Party took a defensive stance, retaliating against the opposition party members on Facebook as well.
